Ice Cold Experiments!

We observed our hands and did three tests to check the colour, temperature, and mobility of our hand before and after placing them in a cooler of cold water. We imagined what it would be like if we fell into a stream or lake in the Springtime. We learned about how the weight of our clothes changes when they get wet. We learned new safety rules when around bodies of water in the Spring and Winter.

Character Trait Celebration Walk

C'est le printemps déjà!!

Bonjour!
Hard to believe it is the end of March already!

Reading - As we head into April, I have been completing another GB+ reading assessment with each student. Our reading is coming along nicely!

Please remember to read with your child each day and work on reading strategies. Students are encouraged to sound out words carefully by covering their words with their finger, saying the sounds out loud, and re-reading the blends to put the word together. Furthermore, after sounding out a word, make sure that they are repeating the word carefully.
I have posted the Lecture Enfant - vidéos link on the blog with the username and password. Please visit this site frequently as it offers books read aloud as well as sight words so that students hear correct pronunciation.
Oral Language - Listening and Speaking -- PLEASE encourage your child to be speaking in French in the classroom at all times. Using the vocabulary learned in class is the BEST way to strengthen understanding and further help with reading. You may also find French resources on YouTube, Television, or the Radio to support hearing the French language at home.

Math - We have been working on balancing equations (with numbers less than 10) as an introduction to Algebra.
For example,
             a.  6+3 = 5+___
             b.  8 -___ = 2+3

The class has been doing very well with this concept but I would ask that you continue to work on these at home.
We are moving on to Number Sense and Numeration. We will be solidifying our counting by 10s and making groups of 10. We will be composing and decomposing numbers to 20 in a variety of ways. We will be counting backwards from 20 by 1s, 2s, and 5s. Please be counting at home each day in a variety of ways, (skip counting by 2s, 5s, 10s, and backwards). We will be investigating dividing whole objects into equal parts using fractional names (halves, fourths, and one-quarter).

Science - We will be finishing up our Energy Unit in the next few weeks. We will be discussing Wind Energy and continuing with energy from the Sun as we grow some plants in class. We will be looking at the transfer of energy:
ex.   from the sun --> to plants --> to animals --> to humans
Tomorrow is our presentation from L.C. Henderson on Spring Water Awareness.

Social Studies - We are continuing with Our Local Community. We have been looking at Ontario and Sarnia maps, local landmarks, etc. We have talked about residential and commercial areas of the city. We have talked about plans for what we can do to make our community a more safe or clean place. We will be investigating occupations in these upcoming weeks.

Thank you for the continued support of your child's education. We have been having a great time so far this year!

Monday, March 7th

Bonjour!

Hard to believe that March Break is coming so soon!
Dictée words for this week all have the letter /e/ sound.
1. le renard
2. petit
3. un arbre
4. je regarde

Math
We are moving into Patterning and Algebra with numerical patterns. We are learning to build 100s charts and find numerical patterns within the chart. For example, we are looking at how a 100s chart is set up - growing and shrinking patterns, numbers within the columns and rows, etc.

What can we work on at home? Please work on COUNTING! In all different ways! -- Skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. -- Counting forwards and backwards from 20, etc.

Language
Writing:
We are learning to organize and develop ideas for a Narrative. We have been working on plans for our own stories and will be writing various stories as a class. We are learning the different parts of a Narrative. We are focusing on the Characters, Problem, Solution and Setting of the stories that we read and write.
What can we work on at home? Each time you read a story, please ask your child questions such as Who, What, When, Where, Why? about the story!

Reading:
Please continue to use the online "Livres-vidéos" site for further resources in French. Please visit the Sight Words activities as well as the Books sections.

I will be completing another GB+ Reading Assessment with the class in the Spring.
Please continue to work on the reading strategies that we have been focusing on in class - point to each word, re-read words after sounding out, covering words, using pictures to make connections with vocabulary words, read out loud, recount the story after reading, etc.

Have a great week and March Break!
