Le 26 janvier

Bonjour tout le monde!

Hard to believe it's already the end of January..  We have just been having too much fun in Grade 1!!

This week:
Mathematics -- We are wrapping up addition and subtraction of whole numbers to 20. We are using various math manipulatives such as rekenreks, number lines, white boards, counters, and hundreds charts to help solve problems. We will be setting up a store in the classroom this week as we begin learning about coins and continuing addition and subtraction using money (using cents).
Please work on skip counting EVERY day using the 100s chart that I sent home last week! :)

Language -- Writing: Students have been writing Persuasive pieces following a model. They have been doing VERY well! :) I am so proud of how their writing has come! We will be wrapping up Persuasive and moving on to Narrative writing following a model. I keep their writing pieces in their Writing Folders here at school.
Reading: We have been doing lots of Guided Reading in small groups. We are continuing to predict what we will read about, reviewing vocabulary as we think about what will happen, retell after reading, etc. We have been working on our reading strategies, such as prediction, sounding out our words carefully, re-reading our words and sentences, reading and sounding our words out loud, using our finger to point to the words, looking at the pictures to make connections to our words, and asking questions when we need support. Please continue to work on these strategies each night. Also, last night I sent home the same Sight Words chart showing the sight words that your child knows. Please continue to work on these as well.

Social Studies -- We have started our new unit - My Local Community. We will be studying local attractions, landmarks, occupations, maps, etc. If you have any neat resources pertaining to Sarnia (and area) please feel free to send them in and we can investigate them as a class!

Science -- We are finishing up Materials, Objects and Everyday Structures. We have been building, investigating, and learning lots of new vocabulary words along the way! Next up, is Energy!

Music -- We are learning some of our pitches - in Grade One we only focus on doh, mi, soh, la, and doh -- but we hear the others as well. We are using our voices, hand signs, and Boom Whackers to hear and sing the sounds. We will be working on short compositions in groups over the next few weeks -- They LOVE this! So much fun!

I hope every one enjoys their Tuesday.
Thank you for the continued support of your child's education.

Tuesday, January 12th

Welcome back!

This week our dictée words are using the /è/ sound again. Our words are:
1. être (to be)

2. la fenêtre
3. peut-être

This week I am conducting GB+ Reading Assessments again (for those that are ready) and Sight Word Assessments.
We have been working hard on our counting to 100 and identifying numbers up to 100. We have been working on skip counting by 5s and 10s.  We have been using various math manipulatives and resources to help with our counting and to show our thinking.
Please support your child at home by counting by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. I will be sending home a 100s chart to support learning at home as well.

As I sent home in the newsletter the first week back, please be visiting the Lecture Enfant website to practise sight words and the stories provided AND/OR reading the book that your child brings home on Mondays every night. Here is the website again just in case you missed it...
